A conversation on the unofficial GURPS Discord made me realize I hadn’t done a great job (or really any job at all) of illustrating how to actually use some of the tools in my posts; in particular, the GURPS Dungeon Fantasy randomizers.
So, here’s how to quickly build (or roll up) a random 62-point delver using some of my earlier posts!
Step 1
Roll for (or choose) a random basic professional module over here.
Based on the resulting profession’s “type,” scroll to the top of the same post to find its corresponding novice template.
Spend points according to both the corresponding base novice template and the basic professional module you rolled (which the cost of the novice template includes).
This step may require consulting the profession’s sourcebook to determine which weapon skills and/or spells are available, which can slow things down.
Consider pulling some of these details for the most common 11 “core” professional templates in advance!
Step 2
Roll for (or choose) a random [-25]-point disadvantage package over here.
If specific disadvantages are required by your basic professional module, exchange disadvantages from your disadvantage package for the ones in your professional module now—ensuring the [-25] point package remains at the same overall value.
This can require some tweaking. Consider altering self-control numbers for quick point value tweaks.
Step 3
You’re done—start playing!
Optionally, if you want to make your delver a little more “complicated,” continue on to either (or both) of the following steps.
- Step 4, to take on additional disadvantages in exchange for a power-up (GM permitting).
- Step 5, to add quirks that help flesh out your character and give them a few extra points to round out their skills.
Step 4 (optional)
Roll up one additional disadvantage package, as per step 2. Then choose one of the following three options:
- Select an appropriate 25-point upgrade module if Delvers to Grow is available.
- Spend 25 points on options from the full professional template. This will require consulting the profession’s source book for details.
- Roll for (or choose) a 25-point racial template over here. This will require consulting the source book for the template in question and modifying it according to the notes in the post for that template.
Either continue to step 5 (also optional) or stop here and declare your character complete, if that’s all the tinkering you want to do.
Step 5 (optional)
Roll for (or choose) up to 5 quirks over here.
Spend the resulting points on improving skills within your novice and basic professional module or save the resulting points to spend once the game begins.
Either way, your delver is now complete! Let the adventure begin.
